The Methodology and Methods of Employing Qur’anic Questioning in Educational Practice

Abstract

Questioning is considered one of the fundamental principles of learning and an essential component in building knowledge within the field of education. The Qur’an itself employs questioning and grants it great importance. Therefore, the mechanisms of questioning should be utilized within the pedagogical dimension of the teaching–learning process. Questions are among the most effective educational methods, producing strong impact and benefit, and they serve as an important means of building bridges of communication, understanding, familiarity, and goodwill among people.

This research explores the methodology of questioning in the Qur’an from an educational perspective through the study of Qur’anic verses related to the subject and by deriving key pedagogical principles from them as methods for learning and teaching, principles that align with modern educational theories.

The first section addresses the methodology of employing Qur’anic questioning in educational practice. This begins with the proper formulation of questions by the teacher to the student and by the student to the teacher. Effective questions must be clear, concise, and free from unnecessary wording, and they should stimulate thinking and lead to comprehensive responses.

Among the etiquette of the learner are politeness in asking questions, humility, and seeking permission when addressing the teacher. The second section examines the different forms of Qur’anic questioning used in teaching. In the Qur’an, questions are used for affirmation, denial, reproach, emphasis, encouragement, warning, command, reproachful reminder, pride, glorification, intimidation, facilitation, threat, abundance, encouragement, supplication, wish, belittlement, sarcasm, ridicule, rejection, reminder, reflection, and challenge.

The research concludes with several recommendations, including the necessity for teachers to master the skill of formulating and presenting questions effectively, encouraging learners through questioning, and carefully preparing different types of assessment questions rather than improvising them during the lesson.
