Abstract
Serenity (sakīnah) represents a precious aspiration and a lofty goal due to its significance for human psychological and mental health. Serenity is a priceless jewel that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, placed in the hearts of the prophets and believers during times of hardship, increasing them in faith, steadfastness, security, and tranquility. It made them more effective and impactful in performing the most difficult tasks under the harshest circumstances. Therefore, preparing to attain and acquire it deserves great importance.
The present study aimed to identify the factors leading to serenity in light of the Noble Qur’an. The descriptive-analytical method was employed to achieve this general objective by examining Qur’anic verses and analyzing available psychological studies. The most significant findings revealed three primary factors contributing to serenity: the faith-based factor, the cognitive-intellectual factor, and the behavioral-practical factor.
It became evident that faith influences serenity through achieving psychological balance and emotional regulation, as well as through developing psychological resilience and confronting traumatic situations positively. The Qur’an also highlights the importance of focusing on cognitive components in fostering reassurance, serenity, and psychological well-being. Positive psychological states were found to be linked to positive cognitive components and mental processes praised in the Qur’an, along with their intended outcomes. These include purposeful exploration and research to attain tranquility, seeking evidence and proof to reach certainty, and reflection, which brings comfort and healing.
Furthermore, behavioral actions that generate serenity include listening to the Qur’an, reciting and contemplating it, performing prayer, engaging in remembrance (dhikr), supplication (du‘ā’), repentance, and seeking forgiveness.
