The Rhetoric Lesson and Its Impact on Academic Achievement: Secondary Education as a Model

Abstract

The process of teaching and learning generally aims to move the learner, equipped with the mechanisms of reception, understanding, and perception, from being merely a recipient of knowledge to becoming an active participant in it. This happens through interaction with the learner’s social and universal environment in terms of knowledge, communication, and behavior.
The rhetoric lesson is an integral part of this educational process. It seeks to achieve several objectives, including communicative, cognitive, and methodological competencies, as well as strengthening and teaching values such as religious and social values, with their application in daily behavior inside and outside the educational institution.
Teaching methods, or the didactics of the rhetoric lesson, are an important tool that helps teachers transmit values to learners. This is done by focusing on meaningful topics and highlighting them through educational texts and learning objectives. This is especially important today, as learners face conflicting cultural, informational, and behavioral influences, particularly through social media, which leave them uncertain about which behaviors to adopt or avoid.
The aim of this paper is to propose new approaches and alternative methods suited to the rhetoric lesson, in order to achieve the learner’s targeted competencies while also providing them with a system of values.
