Renewing Islamic Sciences from the Perspective of Taha Abderrahmane: A Study of the Relationship Between Maqasid and Values as a Model

Abstract

This study contributes to highlighting attempts to renew Islamic sciences by drawing on the intellectual efforts of Taha Abderrahmane, particularly regarding the subject of the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿa) and their relationship with the system of values. It also addresses the ethical dimension of Islamic law and its unified moral framework in guiding and reforming society.

Taha Abderrahmane’s contribution lies in his effort to renew Islamic sciences through the perspective of the human sciences, considering the science of maqāṣid as fundamentally an ethical and educational discipline. This approach emerges at a time when multiple interpretations and theories have developed within Islamic sciences in general and the science of maqāṣid in particular, while there is an increasing need to consider contemporary developments and realities.

The study concludes that Taha Abderrahmane approached the topic from a philosophical and ethical perspective, calling for a reconsideration of how the science of maqāṣid is interpreted so that it can serve as a reference framework for a theory of values. Such an approach would ensure that Islamic law remains applicable across time and place while preserving the authority and function of the sacred legal text.
